The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) latest Global Liveability Index ranked 173 cities worldwide, measuring performance across stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
The result is an annual snapshot of the destinations where residents are fortunate to enjoy the highest quality of life. Here are the world’s five most liveable cities for 2026.
1. Copenhagen, Denmark

For the second year running, Copenhagen has claimed the top spot with an overall score of 98 out of 100.
The Danish capital earned perfect scores for stability, education and infrastructure, reflecting its people-first approach to urban living. Cycling is the preferred mode of transport, public transport is efficient, and residents make full use of the city’s parks, waterfronts and clean canals throughout the year. Despite its popularity with visitors, Copenhagen maintains a relaxed atmosphere where outdoor living is part of daily life.
2. Vienna, Austria

Vienna retains second place, reinforcing its reputation as one of Europe’s most liveable capitals. The Austrian city achieved perfect scores for healthcare and education, supported by an excellent public transport network and walkable neighbourhoods. Historic architecture, world-class museums and the city’s famous café culture create an environment where culture is woven into everyday life, while its efficient public services continue to attract residents from around the world.
3. Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne climbed into third place with an overall score of 97.
Widely celebrated for its thriving food scene, arts, culture and multicultural communities, Melbourne offers a balance between career opportunities and quality of life. Distinctive neighbourhoods, leafy parks and extensive green spaces contribute to its high score for culture and environment, making it one of Australia’s most desirable cities to call home.

4. Sydney, Australia

Sydney moved up two places from last year’s rankings to secure fourth place, matching Melbourne with a score of 97.
The city received perfect scores for healthcare and education, while its greatest advantage remains its spectacular natural setting. Beaches, harbour walks and expansive parks are seamlessly integrated into everyday life, allowing residents to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle alongside the energy of Australia’s largest financial hub.
5. Zurich, Switzerland

Rounding out the top five is Zurich, which remains one of the world’s most desirable cities despite slipping slightly in the rankings.
Renowned for its efficiency, Zurich boasts a punctual public transport system, immaculate streets and excellent public services. During the warmer months, locals flock to the city’s rivers and the shores of Lake Zurich, highlighting how nature remains an integral part of urban life. Combined with a consistently high standard of living, the Swiss city continues to rank among the world’s best places to live.
