A dolphin mother has been observed carrying her dead calf for several days in an apparent act of mourning, offering a poignant glimpse into the emotional lives of these intelligent marine mammals.

According to Geographe Marine Research, the dolphin, known as Fraggle, has now lost her last four calves. Drone footage captured her pod staying close and appearing to support her as she carried the calf through the water.

Researchers say dolphins are known to carry their deceased calves for a period after death, a behaviour widely believed to be linked to grief or maternal attachment. While the exact reasons remain under study, mothers eventually have to let go in order to resume feeding and survive.
