The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) won the Excellence in Sustainable Tourism and Conservation Management Award at the Africa Business Forum & Awards 2026, held in Accra, Ghana, over the weekend, according to Daily News Tanzania.

The award recognises the conservation area’s role in safeguarding biodiversity while developing tourism that supports environmental protection and long-term benefits for local communities.

NCAA Conservation Commissioner Abdul-Razak Badru said the recognition reinforced the authority’s responsibility to protect Ngorongoro’s natural and cultural heritage while encouraging responsible tourism.

The latest accolade follows previous international recognition at the World Travel Awards, where Ngorongoro was named Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2023 and 2025.

A remarkable landscape shaped by wildlife and culture

Established in 1959, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a multiple land-use landscape where wildlife shares the environment with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists, whose traditional livelihoods include livestock keeping.

Its varied terrain encompasses highland plains, open grasslands, woodlands and forests, with the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater at its centre. The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, the crater is one of Tanzania’s most distinctive natural landmarks and a major draw for wildlife enthusiasts.

The wider conservation area supports diverse wildlife and threatened species, while forming part of the seasonal migration routes used by wildebeest, zebras and gazelles as they move across the northern plains of Tanzania.

A destination with global significance

Ngorongoro’s importance extends beyond its wildlife and scenery. The region is also internationally significant for its archaeological sites, which provide valuable evidence of human evolution and the relationship between early human populations and their environment.

For travellers, the conservation area offers an opportunity to experience Tanzania’s wildlife, dramatic volcanic landscapes and living cultural heritage in one destination.

The 2026 award adds to Ngorongoro’s international profile, highlighting the role of responsible tourism in supporting conservation and preserving one of East Africa’s most remarkable landscapes for future generations.
