Chasing the rainbow: a colourful guide to Africa’s landscapes

Posted on 1 October 2025 By Zoe Erasmus

Africa is often called the “cradle of humankind,” but it could just as easily be called the “continent of colour.”

Across its 54 countries, landscapes blaze with reds, greens, yellows, and blues, creating natural palettes that feel almost too vivid to be real. From fiery deserts to sapphire seas, each shade of the rainbow can be found etched into Africa’s geography. To journey across the continent is, in a sense, to follow a rainbow on Earth.

Red dominates the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world. In Sossusvlei, dunes tower up to 300 metres high, their rust-coloured sands glowing at sunrise and sunset. The stark black skeletons of camel thorn trees in Deadvlei, set against the crimson dunes and white salt pan, create an otherworldly contrast. This fiery red landscape feels like stepping into a surreal painting and is often considered one of Africa’s most photogenic destinations.

Orange: The Sahara’s Golden Hues, Morocco

Heading north, the Sahara’s Erg Chebbi dunes in Morocco shift between orange and gold as the sun crosses the sky. Travellers can ride camels across the sands or camp overnight to watch the dunes blaze at sunset. By dawn, the desert glows in softer pastel oranges, offering a reminder that even harsh landscapes hold warmth and beauty. The Sahara’s palette isn’t just scenery—it’s an experience of silence, space, and timelessness.

Yellow: The Namib Desert in Bloom, South Africa’s Namaqualand

Yellow bursts into life during the annual wildflower season in Namaqualand, Northern Cape. After winter rains, the arid land transforms into a carpet of daisies and other blooms in shades of yellow, orange, and white. This natural spectacle, best seen between August and September, draws travellers from around the world. Against the blue skies and rocky outcrops, the flowers create a dazzling golden glow across the desert floor.

Green: Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

No rainbow is complete without green, and Africa’s rainforests provide it in abundance. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where dense emerald vegetation stretches as far as the eye can see. It is also one of the best places in the world to track endangered mountain gorillas. Trekking through its thick foliage, with shafts of sunlight filtering through the canopy, immerses visitors in a lush world of life and growth.

Blue: Lake Malawi, Malawi

If green is the colour of life, blue is the colour of serenity and Africa has no shortage of it. Lake Malawi, often called the “Lake of Stars,” is one of the continent’s most dazzling blue gems. Its waters shimmer in shades ranging from sapphire to turquoise, home to hundreds of colourful cichlid fish. Whether kayaking, snorkelling, or simply watching the sun dip below the horizon, visitors are enveloped in a landscape painted entirely in blue.

Indigo: Chefchaouen, Morocco

Tucked into the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is known as Morocco’s “Blue City,” with walls, staircases, and doorways painted in shades of indigo and sky blue. Walking through its winding streets feels like stepping into a dream, where every corner reveals another vibrant shade of blue. The town’s colours are more than aesthetic, they carry cultural significance, believed to represent the sky and heaven, adding a sense of calm to the city’s charm.

Violet: Jacaranda season in Pretoria, South Africa

Finally, violet blooms cap off Africa’s rainbow. Each spring, Pretoria transforms into a city of purple when thousands of jacaranda trees blossom. Streets become tunnels of lavender and lilac flowers, creating one of the most enchanting urban landscapes in Africa. Visitors who arrive in October are rewarded with a city that feels drenched in violet light—a fitting finale to the rainbow journey.

A continent painted in cvery shade

From Namibia’s red dunes to South Africa’s violet jacarandas, Africa offers travellers the chance to journey through the full spectrum of the rainbow. Each colour tells a story of survival in deserts, of abundance in forests, of serenity in lakes, and of culture in cities. The continent’s landscapes are not just beautiful; they are expressions of life in all its hues.

To travel Africa by colour is to see more than destinations. It is to experience the continent as a living, breathing rainbow, where every shade invites exploration and awe.
