Spier’s Picnickery has been given a fresh new look, transforming the popular Stellenbosch stop into more than a place to collect a picnic.

Created in collaboration with designer, chef and restaurateur Jacques Erasmus and brought to life by chef Hennie Nel, the revamped Picnickery now combines a working farm kitchen, artisan grocer and relaxed gathering space.
The concept is designed to give visitors a closer connection to the farm and its seasonal produce. Shelves are stocked with farm-grown ingredients, small-batch pantry products, preserves, honey and olive oil, while the open kitchen offers a glimpse into the preparation of the food served on site.

The offering changes throughout the year. Depending on the season, visitors might find roosterkoek cooking over an open fire, soups simmering in the kitchen or fresh preserves being prepared.
The menu follows the same seasonal approach. Food is simple, generous and made for sharing, with visitors able to put together their own lunch to enjoy beside the Eerste River or in one of the open spaces across the Werf.
For those who prefer a ready-made option, Spier’s curated picnic baskets can be booked in advance, with a new summer menu available from September.

Alternatively, visitors can build their own picnic from the deli counter. Options include homemade pies, seasonal salads and fresh fruit, while the fire zone serves soups and stews during winter. There is also a sandwich bar offering toasted and fresh sandwiches, alongside charcuterie, pâtés and mezze served with artisanal bread.

For something sweet, the Picnickery also offers a selection of cakes, bakes and other treats.

The restored historic space combines traditional details with a relaxed farm-style atmosphere. Whitewashed walls, exposed timber beams, terracotta floors, handcrafted shelving and tiles, wicker baskets and an open fireplace give the Picnickery a distinctly Cape Winelands character.
A hand-painted ice cream cart adds a playful touch during the warmer months, when visitors can enjoy ice cream and other refreshments on the Werf.
The space is also designed to change with the seasons. During winter, the fireplace becomes a focal point of the Picnickery, creating a cosy setting for warming food and drinks. In summer, the stoep opens onto the Werf, providing a spot to linger over coffee, ice cream or a glass of Spier wine.
The result is a Picnickery that functions as both a food destination and a window into the rhythms of farm life, with its offering changing throughout the year alongside the seasons.
