Sandwiches wrapped in wax paper, the faint scent of sunscreen, and the hum of conversation beneath ancient trees or rolling waves. From city parks to remote reserves, there’s no shortage of picnic-perfect spots that pair good food with good views. Here’s your guide — a picnic map across the provinces, highlighting the best spots to lay down your blanket and unwind.

1. Western Cape – Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (Cape Town)

Nestled against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is one of the world’s most celebrated botanical gardens and a quintessential Cape Town picnic spot. Bring your own spread or grab a takeaway platter from Moyo or the Tea Room. The rolling lawns are shaded by trees, and the canopy walkway (“Boomslang”) offers a breathtaking view over the garden. Arrive early on weekends for a good spot near the duck pond.
Picnic tip: Alcohol is allowed, but glass bottles are not — decant your wine into a flask for a classy touch.

2. Eastern Cape – Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve (Gqeberha)

A hidden gem for those who prefer picnicking among wildflowers and quiet forest paths. Located about 40 km west of Gqeberha, the Van Stadens Reserve offers picnic tables, walking trails, and incredible biodiversity, especially during spring. It’s family-friendly, with ample space for kids to run around while adults enjoy the view of the Van Stadens River Gorge.
Picnic tip: Combine your outing with a light hike along the River Trail for the perfect post-picnic stroll.

3. KwaZulu-Natal – Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve (Durban)

Just a short drive from Durban’s city centre, this lush reserve feels like a world away. Expect open fields shaded by wild fig trees, zebra grazing nearby, and the distant call of birds from the coastal forest. It’s a safe, quiet place to picnic, with several marked areas that include braai facilities and benches. The reserve also has mountain biking and walking trails for those who want to explore before or after eating.
Picnic tip: Bring mosquito repellent, KZN’s greenery comes with some tiny guests.

4. Gauteng – Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens (Roodepoort)

An oasis in Johannesburg’s concrete sprawl, this botanical garden combines manicured lawns with wild cliff faces and a spectacular waterfall, home to a pair of nesting Verreaux’s eagles. The gardens are perfect for couples, families, or solo picnickers seeking a quiet escape. There’s a café on-site, but nothing beats your own basket beneath the trees.
Picnic tip: Early mornings are magical, the eagles are most active, and the lawns are still dew-fresh.

5. Mpumalanga – God’s Window Picnic Area (Blyde River Canyon)

When it comes to views, few picnic spots in South Africa rival this one. Perched high above the Lowveld, the God’s Window viewpoint is famous for its sweeping vistas and there’s a picnic area nearby that lets you enjoy those views at leisure. Lush forests, waterfalls, and misty air make this spot feel almost otherworldly.
Picnic tip: Bring layered clothing; the weather can shift from sunny to foggy within minutes.

6. Limpopo – Debengeni Falls (Magoebaskloof)

Pack your basket and head for the cool, cascading waters of Debengeni Falls. Located near Tzaneen, this picnic site offers natural pools, shaded picnic tables, and the soothing soundtrack of falling water. It’s a favourite among locals for day trips and a great way to cool down on humid summer days.
Picnic tip: The rocks near the falls can be slippery, wear sturdy shoes if you plan to explore.

7. North West – Pilanesberg National Park

If you like your picnics with a side of adventure, Pilanesberg is perfect. The designated picnic spots inside the park offer tables, braai areas, and the possibility of spotting elephants or giraffes in the distance. Stop by one of the scenic viewpoints, unpack your lunch, and take in the vast savanna stretching out around you.
Picnic tip: Stick to official picnic zones, wildlife may be closer than you think.

8. Free State – Gariep Dam Nature Reserve

Situated on the border between the Free State and the Eastern Cape, Gariep Dam is the country’s largest reservoir and a serene setting for an afternoon by the water. Picnic areas are scattered along the dam wall and grassy banks, offering endless views of calm blue water and passing birds.
Picnic tip: Stay for sunset, the dam glows golden and pink as the sun dips behind the hills.

9. Northern Cape – Augrabies Falls National Park

The thundering falls of the Orange River set the scene for one of South Africa’s most dramatic picnic backdrops. Augrabies offers shaded tables near the main viewpoints, where you can enjoy your meal to the roar of cascading water. In spring, the surrounding desert blooms with colour, making this a must-visit for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Picnic tip: It gets very hot, plan a morning picnic before the midday heat sets in.

10. Western Cape (bonus) – Silvermine Nature Reserve (Cape Town)

Tucked within Table Mountain National Park, Silvermine offers tranquil picnic spots beside a sparkling reservoir. The area is ideal for swimming, light hiking, and birdwatching. Each picnic site has its own braai area, and the surrounding fynbos and mountain views make it one of the city’s most beloved summer escapes.
Picnic tip: Booking is essential on weekends and holidays and don’t forget sunscreen and a hat.

Packing the perfect South African picnic

Before setting off, remember the essentials: reusable cutlery, a picnic blanket, sunscreen, insect repellent, and eco-friendly waste bags (leave no trace!). South Africa’s natural beauty is unmatched — and the best way to appreciate it is simply to sit, eat, and let the landscape speak.
