Arniston’s name is also rooted in tragedy. In May 1815, the HMS Arniston was wrecked along the coast after encountering the dangerous Agulhas Reef. The disaster became one of the most significant shipwrecks in the region’s history, and the town eventually adopted the vessel’s name.
Interestingly, the town is known by two names: Arniston and Waenhuiskrans, with Waenhuiskrans officially recognised as the area’s Afrikaans name.

Happily end your day at Willeen’s Restaurant, set inside one of the old cottages in Kassiesbaai, with one of the simplest and most fitting seaside dishes of all: fish and chips.

Explore the Waenhuiskrans Cave and, once inside and your eyes have adjusted, you’ll be greeted by its remarkable oval-shaped opening towards the sea.
Perhaps take a leisurely stroll to the local harbour and watch the fishing boats come in. Or, if you’re a history buff, make the drive to L’Agulhas (the southernmost tip of Africa) and stand where sailors and travellers have stood for generations.
