Blue skies replace grey afternoons, daytime temperatures linger comfortably above 20°C, and beaches, bushveld and subtropical forests remain inviting long after summer has ended.

South Africa’s varied climate means you do not have to leave the country to escape winter. Thanks to the warmer Indian Ocean, lower altitudes and subtropical weather patterns, several destinations continue to enjoy mild to warm conditions throughout June, July and August. If you’re looking to swap icy mornings for sunshine, these are the places worth adding to your winter travel list.
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
Few South African cities have earned their reputation as a winter favourite quite like Durban. Founded in 1835 and named after Sir Benjamin D’Urban, the city has long been one of the country’s busiest ports and one of its most-loved beach destinations.
Winter days regularly reach around 22 to 25°C, making swimming, surfing, beachfront walks and outdoor dining possible while much of the country shivers. The warm Indian Ocean keeps sea temperatures comfortable throughout the colder months, making Durban one of the few places where beach holidays remain firmly on the agenda.

Winter transforms the region into one of the country’s finest outdoor destinations. Daytime temperatures typically range between 23 and 27°C, humidity drops, mosquitoes become less active and wildlife viewing improves as vegetation thins. It is also the beginning of whale watching season along the coastline.
Boat cruises reveal hippos and crocodiles, while nearby Cape Vidal offers excellent snorkelling on calm winter days.

Maputaland and Kosi Bay, KwaZulu-Natal
Near South Africa’s northern border with Mozambique lies one of the country’s most overlooked winter destinations. Kosi Bay forms part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and is famous for its ancient Thonga fish traps, some of which have been used for centuries.
Despite being visited less frequently than other coastal destinations, winter brings warm days averaging around 25°C alongside crystal-clear estuary waters and peaceful beaches.
Travellers come here for kayaking, snorkelling, birdwatching and guided cultural experiences with local communities.

Although winter mornings can start briskly, Hoedspruit quickly warms into pleasant, sunny days that often reach the mid-20s. Originally developed as an agricultural town before becoming one of South Africa’s premier safari gateways, it now attracts travellers throughout the year.
Winter is widely regarded as the best safari season. Dry conditions force wildlife to gather around rivers and waterholes, making game viewing significantly easier. Vegetation is also thinner, improving visibility across the bush.
Between game drives, visitors can explore the Panorama Route, the Blyde River Canyon or nearby wildlife rehabilitation centres.

Bela-Bela, Limpopo
Its name means “boiling-boiling” in Sepedi, a reference to the naturally heated mineral springs that have drawn visitors here for centuries. Formerly known as Warmbaths, Bela-Bela has been welcoming travellers since the late 1800s.
Even in winter, daytime temperatures are comfortably mild, making it easy to enjoy bush walks, game drives and outdoor activities before unwinding in the warm mineral pools that remain the town’s biggest attraction.
Families, couples and wellness travellers continue to favour Bela-Bela for quick weekend escapes from Gauteng.
Best time to visit: June to August for sunny days and relaxing evenings in the hot springs.

The Wild Coast, Eastern Cape

Winter along this coastline is often crisp but surprisingly pleasant, with many days reaching above 20°C and offering clear skies ideal for hiking.

Why South Africa’s warmest winter destinations work
South Africa’s climate varies dramatically across the country. While the Western Cape experiences its rainy season during winter, much of the east coast and Lowveld enjoy dry, sunny conditions thanks to subtropical weather systems and the warming influence of the Indian Ocean’s Agulhas Current. For travellers, that means winter does not have to mean staying indoors. It can be the ideal season for beach walks without crowds, comfortable safaris, whale watching, hiking and long afternoons spent outdoors.
