14 dead after cable car falls in Italy Posted by Anita Froneman on 24 May 2021 Fourteen people have died after a cable car in northern Italy snapped and crashed into a forest on Sunday, May 23. Marcella Severino, mayor of the town of Stresa said the Stresa-Mottarone cable car dropped 20 metres, and then rolled down a steep slope before it was stopped by the trees, according to NBCNews. There were 15 passengers in the cable car and a five-year-old boy was the lone survivor. The cable car, which is a popular tourist attraction at Lake Maggiore, goes up to the summit of Mount Mottarone in the Alps. According to Al Jazeera, authorities said the cable line was renovated in 2016, but only recently reopened again after lockdown restrictions. An investigation has been launched into the exact cause of the cable failure.
