Airlink converts all South African fares to US dollars
In a move that could shake up travel planning for South Africans, Airlink has announced that all fares originating from the country will now be listed in US dollars. The change, effective from April 2, aligns with IATA Resolution 024a, which came into effect in October 2024.

Why the change matters
According to Travel News , under the new system, the base fare of Airlink tickets will appear in USD in the Global Distribution System (GDS), while the total fare is converted into South African rand using the Bank Selling Rate on the day of purchase. Taxes, fees, and surcharges remain in the original point-of-sale currency.
This update also affects ticket reissues, which will now be processed in USD, with conversions applied at the prevailing exchange rate on the date of the transaction.
Rolling out progressively
Airlink is implementing the conversion country by country, rolling out in batches over a three-week period. This phased approach ensures a smoother transition for travel agents, corporate bookings, and individual passengers alike.
Social media reactions among South African travellers have ranged from curiosity to cautious optimism. Some see it as a positive step toward global standardisation, while others are keeping an eye on fluctuating exchange rates, mindful of potential impacts on ticket prices.
A global perspective
While the move may initially feel unusual for travellers accustomed to seeing fares in rand, it reflects a broader trend in aviation. Airlines worldwide are gradually standardising fare reporting to USD, simplifying international bookings and aligning with IATA’s long-term strategy to create consistency in ticketing.
For South Africans planning domestic or regional trips with Airlink, the key takeaway is simple: check your fare in USD, keep an eye on the daily conversion rate, and don’t be surprised if your travel budget looks slightly different than before.
Airlink’s adjustment is part of a slow but steady march toward a more globally connected travel ecosystem—one dollar at a time.
