Accoring to IOL,The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was alerted shortly after 6pm, triggering a large-scale response from multiple agencies.

Coordinated rescue efforts launched

NSRI Station Commander Darren Zimmerman said rescue teams from Simonstown and Kommetjie were deployed, including rescue craft Donna Nicholas, Jack & Irene, and Spirit of the Vines, as well as NSRI rescue swimmers.

The operation included the Cape Medical Response (CMR), South African Police Services (SAPS), Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) rangers, and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services. Despite an exhaustive search along the shoreline and at sea that continued after dark, the tourist has not yet been found.

What happened at Diaz Beach

According to Zimmerman, the family had been visiting Cape Point on their last day in the city. While at Diaz Beach, the missing man and a male relative considered a quick swim.

The relative, a firefighter from the United States, quickly realised the sea conditions were dangerous due to strong currents and advised an immediate exit.

“Even in shin-deep water, the missing man was swept off his feet by rip currents and pulled out to sea,” Zimmerman said.

The incident underscores the power of the ocean around Cape Point, where even experienced swimmers can be caught off guard.

Search and ongoing investigations

NSRI, alongside police diving and water units, continue to search for the missing tourist. Authorities urge beachgoers to exercise caution, particularly in areas known for strong currents and unpredictable surf.

Local residents and visitors alike have expressed shock on social media, with many highlighting the need for heightened safety measures at popular beaches. Cape Town tourism officials stress that while the area is a draw for scenic views and wildlife, the ocean can be unforgiving.

“This is a stark reminder of how quickly fun can turn dangerous near the sea,” Zimmerman added, urging visitors to respect posted warnings and local advice.

The family remains on site, supported by authorities and rescue teams, while efforts to locate the missing tourist continue into the evening and beyond.
