Search continues off Durban coast after stowaways jump from container ship in desperate bid for shore
A tense search operation is unfolding off the coast of Durban after a man went missing at sea following a dramatic incident involving suspected stowaways aboard a container vessel approaching the port.
What began as a routine maritime approach into one of South Africa’s busiest shipping hubs quickly turned into an emergency rescue mission, one that is still ongoing days after the incident.
Seven men entered the water as ship neared Durban
According to the south african, maritime reports, seven men went overboard from a container vessel approximately five nautical miles off the coast as it approached the Port of Durban.
The alarm was first raised through a Pan Pan emergency broadcast via Telkom Maritime Radio Services, signalling a serious but not yet life-threatening situation at sea.
The group is believed to have been stowaways attempting to abandon the ship in a desperate effort to swim toward shore.
While the situation quickly escalated, six of the men were recovered by the vessel itself. One man, however, remains missing.
Nightfall search launched as sea conditions complicate rescue
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was alerted around 18:00 on Monday, 20 April, although the initial emergency call had reportedly gone out earlier in the day.
By the time rescue teams responded, darkness was already setting in over the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, adding urgency and difficulty to the operation.
Despite the challenges, NSRI Durban launched a full search in coordination with the Transnet National Ports Authority Port Control.
Rescue craft including Alick Rennie and Spirit of Surfski 6 were deployed, with teams using drift modelling and weather conditions to map likely search zones.
Multiple ships join coordinated search effort
The search has not been limited to rescue crews alone. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre also mobilised nearby commercial vessels, which assisted in scanning the area where the incident occurred.
A drift buoy was deployed to better understand ocean currents and improve tracking of the missing man’s possible movement at sea.
Despite these coordinated efforts, no sign of the individual has been found so far.
Authorities have confirmed that he was last seen wearing a green shirt and green pants.
Authorities widen alert as search expands along KZN coast
As the operation continues, additional agencies have been brought into the response effort, including Police Search and Rescue units and Sea Borderline Control.
The KwaZulu-Natal surf rescue network has also been placed on standby, with coastal teams asked to remain vigilant.
All vessels operating in the area have been notified as part of ongoing maritime safety protocols.
A recurring maritime risk along busy shipping routes
Incidents involving stowaways are not uncommon in major global port cities, and Durban — as a key entry point for international shipping — occasionally sees similar high-risk situations.
But jumping from a moving vessel into open water remains one of the most dangerous choices a person can make at sea, especially near large commercial shipping lanes where currents, distance to shore, and vessel traffic all pose serious threats.
