Plan ahead or get stuck: Easter traffic set to spike
If you’re hitting the roads this Easter weekend, timing will be everything. Gauteng’s N1 and N4 corridors, connecting major hubs through Limpopo, North West, and Johannesburg, are expected to be packed, with motorists facing long delays if they travel during peak hours.

According to The Citizen, Bakwena, the Platinum Corridor Concessionaire, has released its Easter traffic plan, warning that heavy congestion will hit three key periods:
- Thursday, 2 April: 12pm – 9pm
- Friday, 3 April: 6am – 3pm
- Monday, 6 April: 12pm – 9pm
“Roads are shared spaces. One good decision can save a life,” said Bakwena COO Solomon Kganyago. Drivers are urged to buckle up, stick to speed limits, and ensure both themselves and their vehicles are fit for the journey.
More patrols, fewer roadworks, extra support
To keep traffic moving and support motorists, Bakwena will suspend roadworks along key stretches during peak times. Patrols will be increased, with additional vehicles deployed to respond to accidents and provide assistance.
This year marks the fourth collaboration with Renault South Africa, with six new Renault Captur vehicles joining the fleet to bolster road safety and emergency response. Nosipho Manitshana, Renault South Africa’s VP for marketing, emphasised the ongoing goal: “We want safer roads for both motorists and pedestrians during high-volume travel periods.”
Fight fatigue, plan tolls, stay safe
Bakwena stresses that driver fatigue is a major risk over busy holiday periods. Travelers are advised to stop and rest every two hours or 200km, and to plan toll payments in advance—SANRAL tags remain the fastest way to glide through toll plazas without delays.
A 24/7 emergency line (0800 BAKWENA / 0800 225 9362) is available, and motorists should use blue kilometre markers to help pinpoint their location when calling for assistance. For real-time traffic updates, following @bakwenan1n4 on X is recommended.

With traffic volumes expected to surge this Easter weekend, planning and patience will be your best friends. Avoid the N1 and N4 during peak windows, rest often, and ensure tolls and routes are prepped in advance.
