The Dubai-based carrier has announced a new Comprehensive Travel Cover product, developed in partnership with Travel Guard, that includes conflict-related medical expense cover, trip extensions, baggage protection and emergency assistance. The new offering is available to South African travellers from 17 June 2026.

As international travel continues to rebound and global uncertainty remains a concern for many travellers, the new insurance product aims to provide additional peace of mind before and during a journey.

Expanded protection for modern travellers

Among the headline features is conflict-related medical expense cover of up to US$25,000, alongside a complimentary trip extension of up to 30 days if travellers are unable to continue their journey as planned.

Unlike many traditional travel insurance policies, the cover is not automatically invalidated by government travel advisories, offering broader protection across a range of circumstances.

The policy also includes trip cancellation cover, compensation for delayed or lost baggage, unlimited medical expenses and worldwide emergency evacuation cover.

Additional airline support during disruptions

Beyond the insurance benefits, Emirates has introduced airline-managed assistance designed to help travellers navigate unexpected disruptions.

If flights are cancelled due to conflict-related events or operational challenges, Emirates will rebook affected customers to their final destination at no additional cost. This may include alternative Emirates services or flights operated by other airlines when necessary.

Travellers impacted by disruptions such as airspace closures may also receive airline-managed hotel accommodation and extended-stay support, benefits provided directly by Emirates rather than through the insurance policy.

The airline says these measures form part of its broader commitment to customer care and flexibility, alongside existing benefits such as complimentary ticket date changes on eligible bookings and its 24-hour fare hold option.

Available to South African travellers

South African customers can purchase Emirates’ Comprehensive Travel Cover when booking flights through the airline’s website or add it later through the Manage Booking platform.

The product launches in South Africa alongside several other international markets, including the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Germany, France, Singapore and New Zealand.

According to Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, the new offering was developed in response to customer demand for broader travel insurance protection.

“Travel demand remains strong, but we identified a gap in the market when it came to comprehensive travel insurance cover,” Clark said. “Together with Travel Guard, we are pleased to offer an enhanced product that provides reassurance across a wider range of travel situations.”

Travel Guard’s Head of Global Business and Partnerships, Russel Antonio, said the collaboration reflects changing traveller expectations and sets a new benchmark for travel protection.

For travellers planning international trips in an increasingly unpredictable world, the new cover could offer an additional layer of security, both in the air and on the ground.
