Emirates will pay if you catch COVID-19 onboard

Posted on 28 July 2020

To try and encourage travelers into boarding its planes once again, Emirates will pay for a passenger’s treatment should they contract the virus onboard. The carrier is the first airline in the world to offer flyers this option.

‘We’re the first airline to provide free cover for your health and quarantine costs if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 on your travels. We’re keeping you safe on the journey and giving you extra security wherever you are in the world,’ Emirates wrote on their website.

The new policy went into effect on July 23 and will run until October 31. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 after flying with the airline, Emirates will cover your medical expenses up to R3 million [€150 000] and your quarantine costs up to R1 942 [€100] per day for 14 days.

Passengers are covered under the new policy regardless of which class they’re flying.

The cover is valid for 31 days from the moment you take your first flight, and it covers you even if you travel onwards to another city, according to Emirates.

In order for someone to qualify for this coverage, they must prove that they were not infected with the coronavirus before boarding the plane by providing a negative test result.
