Established on 19 May 1916, the Camps Bay Group has woven a rich tapestry of legacy and service, empowering generations of children through its pioneering Scouting initiatives.

The flames broke out during the night of 26-27 August 2025, completely obliterating not just the structures, but a treasure trove of history that encapsulated the spirit of the community.

In a heartfelt statement on social media, Scout Group Leader Isabell Anders expressed her devastation, saying, ‘Everything has been lost from camping and training equipment to irreplaceable history, including our honours board with names of Springbok Scouts dating back to our early years,’

While the fire did not spread to the surrounding vegetation, the impact on the Group has been significant. Thankfully, prompt responses from the fire brigade and police prevented further damage, allowing the community to focus on the shocking reality of the destruction.

Investigations are ongoing, with fire inspectors advising that a case of burglary and arson could be pursued. ‘We have opened a case,’ Anders confirmed, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

In the wake of this catastrophe, authorities have requested that Scouting families and the public remain clear of the site until all official inspections have been completed.

Despite the overwhelming loss, Anders shared her gratitude for the surge of support from the community and fellow Scout Groups. ‘We are very grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love,’ she stated.

The 1st Camps Bay Scout Group is known for its quality programmes and unwavering commitment to community service, supported entirely by dedicated volunteers.

SCOUTS South Africa Chief Executive Officer Wayne du Plessis offered his condolences, commenting, ‘We are devastated to hear about the fire that destroyed the Scout Halls of 1st Camps Bay Scouts. This Scout Group has given so much to young people in their community, and we extend our full support during this difficult time,’

Moving forward, Anders emphasised the need for community support as the Group begins to regroup and contemplate the future.

‘Once we’ve regrouped, we’ll share a list of needs. At this stage, monetary donations are the most helpful until we have found our footing,’ she said, rallying for collective efforts to rebuild what has been lost.
