The iconic Hapoor Dam is being upgraded to ensure safer, more reliable water access for wildlife.
According to reports by Travel News Africa, park officials from SANParks revealed that the original dam’s clay-based substrate had become unsafe, particularly for smaller or younger animals, making mobility around the waterhole difficult.
In response, a brand-new concrete dam (measuring roughly 45 × 30 metres and two metres deep) is being constructed across the road from the original site. Its size mirrors the old dam to preserve habitat and ensure continuity of water supply for the park’s animals.
Once the new structure is up and running, the original Hapoor Dam will be fenced off and rehabilitated, giving the surrounding land a chance to recover while maintaining ecological balance.
This carefully planned upgrade reflects SANParks’ commitment to sustainable conservation and wildlife welfare. For travellers, it means that even during the renovation period, the park remains committed to delivering memorable, safe safari experiences and preserving one of Addo’s most iconic wildlife-viewing spots.
