For many South Africans travelling overseas, the first round of drinks often comes with a moment of hesitation.

A quick currency conversion. A mental calculation. And sometimes, a decision to skip that extra drink altogether.
Now, a new campaign by Heineken® aims to remove that friction entirely.
Launched in South Africa on 9 April 2026, ‘Bar De Change’ reimagines the traditional bureau de change, but with a social twist. Instead of exchanging money, travellers exchange the uncertainty of fluctuating exchange rates for something simpler: beers priced as they would be back home.

The activation debuted at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where departing passengers could purchase Heineken® beers at South African prices before boarding their flights. Rather than receiving physical drinks, travellers were issued digital vouchers redeemable at selected Heineken partner bars across Europe.
The concept is straightforward. One beer there equals one beer here.
At participating venues, South African travellers could enjoy a Heineken at roughly the same price they would pay locally, removing the need for constant currency conversions and encouraging more relaxed social experiences abroad.
According to Heineken South Africa Brand Director Alex Drake, the idea was inspired by how exchange rates influence everyday travel decisions.
“South Africans understand better than most how exchange rates can shape experiences overseas,” he said. “With Bar De Change, the goal was to remove the mental maths so travellers can focus on sharing moments and connecting with people.”

To showcase the campaign in action, several South African creators travelled through Europe, redeeming their vouchers in multiple cities while documenting the experience online.
Actor Kwenzo Ngcobo described the concept as surprisingly impactful. Without needing to calculate prices, he said, travellers could simply enjoy their surroundings and the social atmosphere of each destination.
Content creator Katlego noted that the experience made unfamiliar cities feel instantly more welcoming, while Candice Coulsen, known online as Kandis Kardash, highlighted the sense of connection the initiative creates between home and abroad.
While Bar De Change launched as a South African-led campaign, it reflects a broader travel reality: exchange rates often shape how freely people experience destinations. By simplifying one small but familiar travel ritual, the initiative aims to make social moments abroad feel just a little more accessible.
