Visitors to St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal were treated to an unexpected – and rather hefty – dinner guest this week when a hippo was spotted wandering outside Alfredo’s Restaurant.

The video, shared on Alfredo’s Facebook page, has quickly gained traction as amused diners filmed the massive animal calmly making its way through the parking area before disappearing back toward the water.
While the sight may startle out-of-towners, locals know that hippos are no strangers to St Lucia streets. The town, which borders the iSimangaliso Wetland Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is famous for its close encounters with wildlife. Hippos often leave the estuary after sunset to graze on nearby lawns, sometimes wandering past shops, petrol stations and even restaurants like Alfredo’s.
Authorities regularly remind visitors to keep a safe distance and never attempt to approach or feed these animals. Despite their docile appearance, hippos are know to be territorial and can move surprisingly fast on land.
For travellers, though, these moments capture exactly what makes St Lucia so special, a rare blend of wild beauty and small-town charm. Whether you’re here for a boat cruise, a beach day, or a pizza at Alfredo’s, chances are you might just share the evening with one of Africa’s most iconic creatures.
