If your idea of a perfect holiday involves moving from one turquoise bay to the next, you’re in luck — a new global study has just crowned the best country on Earth for island hopping.

According to research by tour company Island Hopping, Indonesia has taken the top spot as the world’s premier island-hopping destination. The Southeast Asian nation boasts more than 6,000 inhabited islands, each offering its own blend of natural beauty, culture, and adventure.
What sets Indonesia apart isn’t just the sheer variety of islands — it’s the affordability. The study found that ferry rides between islands average just $9.90 (about R170), while a meal for two costs around $16.38 (roughly R282). Travellers can also choose from an impressive 45,000 attractions and tours, ensuring there’s something for every kind of explorer.
Tourism numbers reflect this growing appeal, with 13.9 million visitors flocking to Indonesia in 2024 alone.
“Island hopping offers travellers a unique way to combine adventure, culture, and relaxation,” said a spokesperson from Island Hopping. “With diverse landscapes and climates, it’s one of the most immersive and flexible ways to discover new places while keeping travel affordable.”
Other top island-hopping hotspots
The Philippines claimed second place, home to over 2,000 inhabited islands and known for its powdery beaches and crystal-clear waters. It’s also a budget-friendly choice, with average ferry fares around $14.20 (R245) and meals for two at $21.60 (R372).
Coming in third was Thailand, recently named Travel + Leisure’s Destination of the Year for 2025. Though ferry rides here are pricier (around $45 (R774)), the country makes up for it with more than 33,000 tours and attractions, from vibrant markets to secluded coves.
China and South Korea rounded out the top five, both offering a fascinating blend of culture and coastal exploration.
Europe’s island-hopping gem

Croatia earned the title of Europe’s best island-hopping destination, ranking sixth overall. With 48 picturesque islands, historic towns, and even underwater wineries, it’s a paradise for both beach lovers and history buffs. Ferry fares average $14 (R240), but dining out is a splurge — a meal for two costs around $64.04 (R1101).
Meanwhile, Italy (ranked ninth) remains a dream for travellers chasing the la dolce vita lifestyle. Its islands, from Capri to Sicily, are legendary — but expect to pay for the privilege, with dinner for two averaging $74.03 (R1273), making it the most expensive country for dining on the list.
