According to travelnews.africa, the announcement marks a new leadership transition for the national carrier, which has spent the past few years rebuilding after business rescue and the wider disruption caused by the pandemic. For many in the travel sector, the change comes at an important point in SAA’s recovery, as the airline continues to rebuild its footprint across domestic, regional, and international routes.

Lamola’s role in SAA’s recent chapter

Lamola first joined SAA in July 2021 as a non-executive director and chairperson of the board. He later assumed the role of GCEO in May 2022.

He took over during a difficult period for the airline, when SAA was working to restore operations and re-establish its position in a highly competitive aviation market. That made his tenure closely tied to one of the most closely watched phases in the airline’s recent history.

In South Africa, SAA still carries weight as the country’s national carrier. That means major changes at the airline often draw interest not only from frequent flyers and travel businesses, but also from the wider public following its long recovery story.

What changed during his tenure

According to SAA, the airline expanded its fleet from five to 19 aircraft under Lamola’s leadership. Its route network also grew from six to 17 destinations.

That growth included the reintroduction of international routes such as São Paulo in Brazil and Perth in Australia, alongside a stronger domestic and regional network. For passengers, that translated into wider travel options and improved links between South Africa and key destinations.

For the travel industry, those route additions also matter beyond the airport. Airline networks shape tourism flows, business travel, and regional connectivity, especially in a market where reliable air access remains central to growth.

Interim leadership is already in place

SAA has also announced its interim plan.

Matshela Seshibe, chief executive of Air Chefs, has been appointed acting group chief executive while the board starts the process of recruiting a permanent successor. The airline says the recruitment process will begin shortly.

The appointment gives SAA a temporary leadership structure as it moves into its next phase, with the board now tasked with identifying the person who will take over permanently.

Other board changes at SAA

Lamola’s resignation comes alongside other changes at the board level. SAA says three board members have also resigned for varying reasons.

The airline has stated that the remaining board members have the expertise and experience to continue carrying out their duties, while the board and executive management remain committed to leadership continuity and operational stability.

What travellers need to know

For now, SAA’s scheduled services and current route network remain in place. The leadership change does not mean an immediate operational change for passengers booking or taking flights.

The bigger focus now shifts to who will be appointed permanently and how that leadership handover will shape SAA’s next chapter. With fleet growth, route expansion and profitability forming part of the airline’s recent progress, the next chief executive will step into a role that remains central to the future of South African aviation.
