New Joburg hotel to employ robot assistants

Posted on 14 October 2020

Hotel Sky, a brand new hotel, is opening in Johannesburg in November and is already available for bookings. The hotel is beautiful, but a big draw is its three robot assistants that will be waiting on guests.

Found in Africa’s business hub, this 453-room hotel has been designed to represent the upmarket aesthetic and business-minded focus of the area. The hotel has multiple conference rooms and a selection of restaurants and bars.

‘Hotel Sky was born out of the dream to make enjoyment luxury and indulgence as affordable and attainable as possible,’ said the hotel on its website.

While opening a hotel during the ongoing pandemic is already a gusty move, a significant draw is the hotels AI-powered robots. These three, named Micah, Lexi and Ariel, which will be at guests service simply through the hotel’s app.

According to the hotel’s website, each robot has their own personality and is trained to assist you with standard concierge jobs like transporting your luggage, delivering room service and answering questions about the hotel and Johannesburg.

These robots and the app system on which the hotel is run means guests can almost avoid all human contact if they wish, a first for South African hotels.

The technology focus is not only limited to the robots, however, but there is also a self-playing grand piano and interactive cooking classes for guests to enjoy.

The Sandton hotel is the first to be opened but it will soon be followed by a similar style hotel in Cape Town in 2021.
