Queen Mary 2 brings historic ocean travel back to South African shores

One of the world’s most iconic ocean liners is heading for South African shores this April. And for maritime enthusiasts, it is a rare sight.

Cunard’s flagship, Queen Mary 2, the only true ocean liner still in active service, will call at both Durban and Cape Town as part of her 110-night World Voyage. Designed specifically for transatlantic crossings rather than conventional cruising, the vessel continues to offer scheduled passenger journeys between Europe and North America, a distinction unmatched by any other ship at sea today.

Arriving from Singapore, Queen Mary 2 is scheduled to dock in Durban on 9 April for a day visit before continuing to Cape Town, where she will arrive on 12 April. The liner will remain overnight in the Mother City before departing for Southampton on the final leg of her 2026 World Voyage, which concludes on 30 April.

A year of historic milestones

The visit coincides with a significant year for the ship. In January, Queen Mary 2 completed her first-ever transit of the Panama Canal, navigating the canal’s new locks and passing beneath the Bridge of the Americas, a landmark moment in her operational history.

Later this year, in November, the liner will celebrate her 450th Transatlantic Crossing, underscoring a legacy built on ocean travel rather than destination-focused cruising.

To mark the occasion, Cunard will host a commemorative voyage from 10 to 17 November. Guests can expect themed events, performances and enrichment experiences, including Cunard Insights talks led by a maritime historian, alongside a celebratory gala dinner.

A rare overnight stay in Cape Town

While Durban’s stop will be brief, Cape Town is among a select number of ports on the world voyage offering an overnight stay. This extended visit allows passengers more time to explore the city’s landscapes, culture and culinary scene.

Limited cabins remain available for travellers interested in joining a shorter 17-day segment departing from Cape Town. The voyage promises a classic ocean travel experience, carrying guests from warm African waters through shifting climate zones toward the cooler North Atlantic en route to the United Kingdom.

According to Shaun McCarthy, Managing Director at Whitestar Cruise & Travel, Cunard’s South African representative, the ship occupies a unique position in modern maritime travel.

“Queen Mary 2 is more than a cruise ship. She is a living piece of maritime history,” he says. “Among hundreds of cruise vessels operating globally today, she remains the only true ocean liner.”

Built for the open ocean

Unlike cruise ships designed primarily for calm, port-intensive itineraries, Queen Mary 2 was engineered to handle the demanding conditions of the North Atlantic. Her reinforced hull, deeper draft and enhanced stability allow for smoother passage through rough seas, making the journey itself a central part of the experience.

As one of the largest ocean liners ever constructed, the ship prioritises space and comfort over passenger density. Wide promenade decks, expansive public rooms and thoughtfully designed interiors create an atmosphere geared toward relaxation during extended days at sea.

Guests can spend time reading in quiet lounges, strolling the wraparound promenade or enjoying uninterrupted ocean views. Despite her scale, the onboard experience remains personal, with private dining venues, enrichment lectures, spa treatments and one of the largest libraries at sea.

Among her standout features is the only planetarium at sea, alongside an art gallery, classic lounges and dedicated kennels that allow pets to accompany guests on Transatlantic Crossings.

Entertainment ranges from West End-style theatre productions and live music to ballroom dancing, fitness classes and outdoor sports courts. Multiple pools and an ocean-view jogging track add to the onboard offering.

Looking ahead

After departing Cape Town later this month, Queen Mary 2 will begin a full season of Transatlantic Crossings between May and December 2026.

South African cruise fans can also look forward to another Cunard visit, with Queen Victoria scheduled to return to local waters in April 2027 during her 109-day World Voyage.

Queen Mary 2 will dock in Durban Harbour on 9 April before arriving in Cape Town at approximately 05:30 on 12 April, where passengers are expected to be welcomed by sunrise views of Table Mountain.
