The Sandton CBD, known as the the financial hub of Southern Africa, has also been named the richest square mile in Africa. Soon, this affluent Johannesburg suburb will be home to the tallest building in Africa.
The Leonardo, a mixed-use building rising above the Sandton skyline will be the tallest constructed building in the country since the 70s, stealing glory from the Carlton Centre. Initially, the developers behind the building, Legacy Group, had decided not to share the fact that the building would be Africa’s tallest.
Legacy Group CEO, Bart Dorrestein, has announced that the building will have over 50 floors and stand at 230m high.

The R3-billion building will be a mixed-use development consisting of apartment units, including penthouses, as well as office space. The residential units will boast the latest technology and showcase luxurious interior designs.

Other amenities include restaurants, a gym and spa, a lifestyle and recreational zone, as well as a business and conference centre.
In a statement, Legacy said “We believe that The Leonardo will be the most technologically advanced, environmentally friendly building on the continent. That has certainly been the thinking behind the planning and development of the property.”
The Leonardo will be the tallest building in South Africa and Africa for a temporary time as Kenya has plans to erect a taller building within the next 3 years. If all goes according to plan, the Leonardo will be complete in 2019.
