Sir David Attenborough has left Instagram

Posted on 26 November 2020

English broadcaster, natural historian and all-around nature lover Sir David Attenborough has left Instagram just two months after he signed up.

Attenborough managed to gain over 6.2 million followers in his short time on the platform, which he used to communicate various environmental messages and to promote his documentary, David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet.

The 94-year-old naturalist joined Instagram on September 24, with his final post going out on October 31.

While his profile is still active, his bio now reads, ‘Account no longer active,’ meaning you can still enjoy his previous posts, but don’t hold your breath for any updates.

Attenborough’s highly popular Instagram account was run with the help of his colleagues Jonnie Hughes and Colin Butfield, who made it clear in the caption of the very first post that, ‘Social media isn’t David’s usual habitat’.

This post gained Attenborough over 1 million followers in just four hours and 44 minutes, which was a Guinness World Record at the time, according to CCN World.

In his final post, Attenborough starts off a short video clip by saying he has passed on the things he wanted to share, and that there are others on social media who can continue to spread his message.

The caption of the post also goes on to state: ‘This might be a wrap for this account – we won’t be posting anything else, though the account will stay open for you to watch David’s messages – but we hope it’s a springboard for many others to build on and share the ways we might create a sustainable future.’
