After over a decade since the last direct service, the skies between South Africa and India are opening again. According to Travel and Tour World, plans are underway to launch direct air routes linking Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban with Mumbai. The flagship Johannesburg–Mumbai route is expected to take off in 2026.
This move is led by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and supported by South African Airways (SAA). It is designed to boost tourism, trade and business between the two countries. Over half of all South Africa–India traffic flows through Mumbai. The city is seen as the gateway to tapping into India’s steadily expanding travel market.
Long-term plans include adding Delhi to the network and expanding direct services from Cape Town and Durban. India has been identified as a high-growth tourism market for South Africa and with SAA’s planned return to India, visitors will soon find it easier than ever to explore South Africa’s landscape and opportunities.
