While southern Europe remains a firm favourite for South African holidaymakers, travel agents are reporting a noticeable uptick in demand for northern European destinations.

A recent Travel News poll found that nearly 30% of agents had observed more clients opting for trips to the north of Europe this year. Destinations such as the UK, Scandinavia, Iceland, and the Baltic states are gaining popularity for their cooler climates, unique landscapes, and fewer crowds.
“We’re seeing steady growth in interest for Northern Europe, especially for experiences like the fjords and Northern Lights,” said Darsha Soobramoney of The Travel Corporation South Africa.
Cruise bookings to the region are also on the rise. “While the Mediterranean remains our top seller, we’ve seen a notable increase in demand for cruises to the Nordic countries and Baltic states,” said Nirosha Sidat, NCL’s Country Manager for Africa.
Northern Europe’s appeal lies in its natural beauty, cultural immersion, and temperate summer climate—especially as southern Europe grapples with extreme heat and over-tourism. According to cruise operators, seasoned travellers are leading the trend, often returning to Europe for less conventional itineraries.
Still, southern Europe holds strong appeal, particularly for first-time visitors seeking iconic cities and beach escapes. “Destinations like Spain, Italy and Greece continue to dominate for their affordability and sunny weather,” said Celeste Muir of Thompsons Holidays.
