South Africa’s most famous landmark, Table Mountain, and its equally iconic Aerial Cableway are once again flying the national flag high with nominations in the 2025 World Travel Awards (WTA) — often dubbed the “Oscars of the tourism industry.”

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is competing for the title of World’s Leading Cable Car Ride, while Table Mountain itself is in the running for World’s Leading Tourist Attraction. These nominations make them South Africa’s only representatives in this year’s global categories, as previously reported by IOL.
Going up against the world’s best
Competition is tough. The Cableway faces rivals like Armenia’s Wings of Tatev, Disney Skyliner Cable Car in the USA, and Canada’s Peak 2 Peak 360. Meanwhile, Table Mountain is up against world icons including the Burj Khalifa, Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.
A legacy of excellence
“Being recognised again at the World Travel Awards is an incredible honour,” said Wahida Parker, managing director of TMACC. “This competition is our industry’s version of the Oscars and reflects a commitment to excellence. These nominations reaffirm our dedication to safety, sustainability, and world-class service — while protecting the mountain’s unique biodiversity.”
Now in its 96th year of operation, the Cableway has carried over 32 million visitors to the summit of one of the New7Wonders of Nature. Beyond offering breathtaking views, it remains a major driver of Cape Town’s tourism economy — creating local jobs and promoting sustainable travel.
South Africans urged to vote
Parker encouraged locals to show their support before voting closes on 26 October.
“Every visitor and every team member has played a part in our journey — from that very first trip in 1929 to the millions who continue to make memories atop Table Mountain. We’ve never won a world title before, and it would be incredibly special to bring it home this year,” she said.
