As South Africans prepare to celebrate Take Your Dog to Work Day on 26 June, animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS South Africa is reminding pet lovers that the occasion should be about more than cute office photos and social media moments.

The organisation says the focus should always remain on the well-being of the animal, as not every dog enjoys the hustle and bustle of a workplace.
A growing trend among pet owners
Over the years, pet-friendly workplaces have become increasingly popular around the world, with many companies recognising the positive impact animals can have on staff morale and stress levels.
In South Africa, the trend has gained traction as more employees embrace flexible and hybrid work arrangements. Social media platforms are often flooded with pictures of dogs curled up beside desks or greeting colleagues in the office.
But according to FOUR PAWS South Africa, every dog reacts differently to unfamiliar surroundings.
‘While many dogs enjoy new environments, not every dog will feel comfortable in an office setting. Owners must recognise their pet’s limits and prioritise their wellbeing above all else,‘ said Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa.
Not every dog is an office dog
A busy workplace can be stimulating for some pets, but stressful for others.
Factors such as a dog’s personality, previous experiences and health condition should all be considered before deciding to bring them along for the day.
Animal welfare experts say owners should pay attention to signs that a dog may be feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Restlessness, excessive panting or a desire to hide in quieter areas could indicate that the pet needs a break.
‘Responsible participation is about knowing your dog and supporting them in a way that makes them feel safe and secure,‘ Miles added.
Tips for a successful office visit
FOUR PAWS recommends that participating workplaces and pet owners take simple steps to ensure the day runs smoothly:
- Bring only dogs that are comfortable around people and other animals.
- Provide a quiet space where pets can rest.
- Keep fresh water and familiar bedding nearby.
- Stick to normal feeding and walking routines where possible.
- Take regular breaks outdoors.
- Respect colleagues who may be uncomfortable around animals.
- Be prepared to take the dog home if they appear stressed.
Celebrating responsibly
For many people, dogs are cherished members of the family, and Take Your Dog to Work Day offers an opportunity to strengthen that bond.
However, FOUR PAWS says participation does not necessarily mean bringing a pet into the office. Spending extra time together while working from home can be just as meaningful.
‘By putting our animals’ needs first, we can make moments like this truly meaningful. It’s about creating positive experiences that strengthen the bond we share with them,‘ said Miles.
With South Africans increasingly treating pets as part of the family, experts say the success of Take Your Dog to Work Day should ultimately be measured not by how many dogs attend, but by how comfortable and happy they are throughout the experience.
