A new luxury retreat has opened on South Africa’s West Coast, offering travellers a chance to slow down and reconnect with nature just an hour from Cape Town.

Set across 2,000 hectares of protected countryside between the Swartland and the Atlantic coastline, De Wildeveldt combines conservation, wide-open landscapes and understated luxury. The retreat occupies land that was once divided into separate farms. Over time, these properties have been consolidated and placed under conservation management, allowing endangered renosterveld and sandveld ecosystems to recover. Ongoing restoration efforts include the removal of invasive plant species, habitat protection and biodiversity conservation.
The result is a landscape of rolling hills, indigenous vegetation, wetlands and expansive views stretching towards the Atlantic Ocean.
New Veldt Haus Collection
The newly launched Veldt Haus Collection introduces a series of one-bedroom luxury villas positioned discreetly within the landscape.
Designed to maximise privacy and immersion in nature, each villa overlooks a bird-rich wetland and surrounding valleys. Interiors feature natural materials, locally crafted furnishings and contemporary South African artwork, creating a relaxed atmosphere that reflects the character of the West Coast.

Each villa includes an open-plan living area, a fully equipped kitchen, a king-size bedroom and a spacious bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers. Floor-to-ceiling views place the surrounding landscape firmly at the centre of the experience.
Outside, guests will find expansive decks with private pools, wood-fired hot tubs, outdoor dining spaces and sunken fire pits. Elevated sky decks provide an ideal setting for stargazing after sunset, accompanied by little more than the sounds of resident owls and the surrounding wilderness.

Exploring the landscape
While relaxation is a major drawcard, De Wildeveldt also caters to travellers seeking outdoor experiences.
A growing network of hiking, trail-running and mountain-biking routes crosses the property, allowing visitors to explore wetlands, indigenous vegetation and elevated viewpoints. A dedicated seven-kilometre trail follows the northern boundary of the reserve, while farm roads and single-track routes provide further opportunities for exploration.

Spring visitors can experience the region’s renowned wildflower season. The property’s bulb-rich veld supports a diverse display of indigenous flowers, and guided flower walks are available during peak blooming periods.
Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter springbok, steenbok and scrub hares, while birdwatchers can look out for endangered black harriers, secretary birds, herons, egrets and a variety of raptors. The area is also home to elusive species including caracal, African wildcat and Cape leopards, which move between the Swartland and coastal regions.

A gateway to the West Coast
De Wildeveldt’s location makes it a convenient base for exploring some of the Western Cape’s best-loved destinations.
The coastal town of Yzerfontein is approximately 20 minutes away, while Darling’s wine farms, olive estates and cultural attractions are within easy reach. Popular destinations such as Paternoster, Langebaan and Riebeek-Kasteel can also be explored as day trips.
