The Waterfront Canal Challenge returns to its pre-Covid venue in the Battery Park Canal at the V&A Waterfront on Sunday, 13 November 2022 from 8:30 am.

This event is Africa’s only urban canal swim, comprised of a one-mile (1600m), half-mile (800m) open water swim. It will start at Battery Park, following a circular route past the One & Only Hotel, and finish back at Battery Park. The categories include both wetsuit and skin swimmers of all ages. The water temperature is expected to be between 14 and 16 degrees.

The invitation-only Elite 1-mile swim will see some of South Africa’s top swimmers pitted against each other. The winner of the invitational swim stands to win the Waterfront Canal Challenge Theodore Yach Elite Mile Trophy, in honour of Yach, who was the Waterfront Canal Challenge’s 2018 inaugural ambassador.

The Waterfront Rotary Club encourages schools to enter their learner to participate in a wave as it is a great start to the swim season.

One of the key goals for this challenge is to raise funds for the Waterfront Rotary Club’s 30th Legacy project. The Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) will collaborate with them to establish the first Smart Work Center aimed at preparing youth for the world of work. Most Salesian learners reside in low and lower-income communities in the Western Cape, where their chances of social and economic prosperity are limited.

‘This is a fun family event for the swimming community and it was time to host another Waterfront Canal Challenge. With the ongoing support of the V&A Waterfront and Big Bay Events, it was an easy decision,’ says Waterfront Rotary Club President Johann Gerber.

When: 1 mile and 800m swim starts at 8:30 am; invitation-only Elite 1-mile starts at 10:30 am; final Theodore Memorial Trophy presented at 12:00 pm
