Visitors to the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park can still experience one of South Africa’s most iconic attractions while major refurbishment work continues on the famous Storms River suspension bridge.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that the bridge remains open and accessible throughout the upgrade project, allowing visitors to continue crossing the dramatic gorge while improvements are carried out in phases.
The refurbishment forms part of a broader reconstruction programme aimed at preserving the landmark for future generations. Since opening in 1969, the suspension bridge has become one of the Garden Route’s best known attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year with its sweeping views over the Storms River gorge, indigenous forests and rugged coastline.
A phased approach to minimise disruption
Rather than closing the attraction entirely, SANParks has adopted a phased construction schedule that allows public access to continue while work progresses.
The project includes rebuilding the bridge superstructures, rehabilitating supporting steel and concrete elements, repairing damaged sections and applying protective coatings designed to extend the lifespan of the structures.
Visitors can still complete the popular Storms River Mouth trail, although temporary changes to access may be introduced as different sections of the project are completed. SANParks has urged guests to follow all on-site signage and adhere to safety instructions during their visit.

The suspension bridge is reached via the approximately 2 km Storms River Mouth trail, an accessible walk that winds through indigenous forest, wooden boardwalks and coastal viewpoints before crossing the mouth of the Storms River.
Its combination of dramatic scenery and relatively easy access has made it one of the Garden Route’s most photographed attractions and a favourite stop for hikers, families and road trippers alike.
The reconstruction project is expected to improve the bridge’s long-term safety and durability while preserving the experience that has made it a South African travel icon for more than five decades. Current timelines indicate the refurbishment is expected to be completed during 2026.
