The Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is all smiles after the Team SPCA runners managed to raise a whopping R90 452 during the popular Two Oceans Marathon this year.
This total includes funds raised at the CoGH SPCA stand during the pre-race expo.
‘Considering all the challenges faced, 90% of Team SPCA runners joined us with their own entries! This is 27 runners in total (23 half marathon and 4 ultramarathon runners),’ said Natasha Johannes, Peer to Peer Fundraiser and Special Events Coordinator of the SPCA.
Runners generously committed to raising funds which went towards the Run2Heal campaign.’Every cent raised would directly impact the Cape of Good Hope SPCA animal hospital and its critically injured/ill patients,’ she added.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA sees an average of 45 000 cases per year, of which more than 60% are classified as moderate to severe, meaning astronomical amounts of money are needed to pay veterinarian bills, food, shelter and other services.
‘Nearly 80% of all animals admitted to the animal hospital are treated successfully and return home with their owner,’ Johannes added. ‘At the heart of this significant caseload, the hospital, our veterinarians, and animal welfare assistants demonstrate the capability to oversee, manage and execute high volume operations without compromising quality.’
This year marked the first time the two races were run separately for health and safety reasons, with the half marathon run on 16 April and ultra-marathon on 17 April 2022.
