Three people have died and five others have been injured after a rock spire collapsed in Cappadocia, a popular tourist region in central Turkey, on Thursday, 29 October. According to AFP, whose original report was published by IOL, heavy rainfall triggered a landslide that caused rocks to break away near Göreme’s open-air museum. Subsequent reports from Turkish media confirmed the higher death toll.

The incident occurred at approximately 3.15pm local time, according to Nevşehir Governor Huseyin Kok. The area was closed to the public as emergency teams responded to the collapse.

Initial reports confirmed two deaths and one injured person taken to hospital. However, as rescue operations continued, another body was recovered, bringing the death toll to three. Five people were reported injured, according to subsequent reporting by Anadolu Agency, Turkey’s national news agency.

Authorities also launched an investigation into the collapse.

Cappadocia’s famous fairy chimneys

Cappadocia is known for its distinctive landscape, shaped by ancient volcanic activity and centuries of erosion. Its unusual rock formations, commonly called fairy chimneys, rise above the surrounding valleys and have become one of Turkey’s most recognisable natural attractions.

The region is also known for its rock-cut churches, underground cities and hot-air balloon experiences. Its combination of geological features and cultural heritage draws visitors from around the world, with parts of the region recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

However, the formations are vulnerable to natural erosion and weather-related damage. Conservation and restoration work has been undertaken to help preserve the region’s geological and cultural heritage.

The collapse near Göreme highlights the natural forces that can affect these striking formations, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
