Valentine’s Day Loss: Italy’s ‘Lovers’ Arch’ collapses into the sea

Posted on 17 February 2026 By Miriam Kimvangu

Love is in the sea no more.

As reported by the Guardian, on Valentine’s Day 2026, the iconic Lovers’ Arch near Sant’Andrea, in the municipality of Melendugno, collapsed into the Adriatic Sea after days of intense storms battered Italy’s southern coastline.

For decades, the limestone arch framed countless travel photographs along the Salento coast. Its curved silhouette, carved naturally by wind and waves, made it one of Puglia’s most recognisable coastal landmarks. But relentless rain, powerful gusts and rough surf weakened the fragile rock. In the early hours of 15 February, the formation finally gave way.

Local officials described the collapse as an emotional loss for the community and tourism sector. The arch was not only a geological feature but also a symbol of romance and a favourite proposal spot. Visitors gathered to witness the aftermath, where rubble now replaces the once elegant stone span.

Experts say the incident highlights an accelerating problem along Mediterranean shorelines. Coastal erosion, intensified by stronger storm systems and shifting climate patterns, is reshaping historic landscapes at an increasing rate. Southern Italy has experienced repeated bouts of severe weather this winter, placing additional pressure on exposed rock formations.
