Day 5: 26 June
Namibia – Ngepi Camp
Today the guys had been given strict instructions. We needed to leave as early as possible. We were staying at Ngepi Camp, which is located just before the Caprivi Strip. The camp straddles the banks of the Kavango River. It was one of the highlights of the trip that I’d been looking forward to.
I heard my name being called through my shower window – damn, the boys were up and ready before me! After a hurried shower and a quick muffin, I took charge of the wheel.
We arrived just in time for a sunset cruise. My doctor friends from Hoedspruit were there and so where the Shoes on Feet team – Mike Sharman, Dan Nash and Richard Mellon. We packed a cooler box with beer, cruised on a twelve-seater barge with a whole bunch of fun and friendly people and a we were in a phenomenal location – what a jol.
We cruised along the banks for a few hours. The light was perfect for the photographs and the animals started to emerge from the bush. Elephants munched on the tall trees dotted along the banks, the hippos bobbed up and down alongside the boat and the fish eagles called in the distance. Although our crew has spent a lot of time travelling Africa, I don’t think we could ever get tired of experiencing these magical moments.
We had a relaxed dinner with the Shoes on Feet team team – three of the funniest guys on the trip for sure. Our “˜orange’ dessert provided much entertainment as everyone gave the opinion to just what it was exactly.
We sat around the campfire and The Pirates of Kariba Dam team joined us for a beer. I couldn’t choose between having the smoke in my face or getting cold. I smell of smoke all day every day so I figured it didn’t matter. It’s just part of the experience of this rally. No one really cares what you look or what you smell like, as long as you’re having a good time and getting into the spirit of the rally.
