The great Braai4Heritage tour rapidly approaches

Posted on 7 March 2011

On 13 March the great Braai4Heritage tour of South Africa begins!

For 40 days I’ll be following Jan Braai (@JanBraai) as he travels around South Africa, visiting 40 of our country’s most amazing heritage sites, meeting the lekker local people who live there and, embracing that most universal of South African pastimes, inviting them to a braai.

The full tour itinerary covers approximately 9000 kilometres – though that’s assuming no wrong turns and that we can still read a map as day after day of red meat and too little sleep take their toll. The chance to travel the length and breadth of South Africa, visit such incredible places and meet so many fascinating people is so awesome a proposition that trivialities like sleep seem of very minor importance to me now. Day 32 or so may elicit a revised opinion. We shall see.

Right now though I’m stoked (the first of many bad braai puns I hear you ask?) and I can’t wait to hit the road. The tour will get underway on Sunday 13 March with Jan (poor touched soul that he is) attempting to ride the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in Cape Town, fuelled only by boerie and brannawyn. Actually I’m not sure about the brandy, but the braai and boerie is very definitely on. Watch out for Jan on Suikerbossie as he stops off at the team braai-plek for a tasty and energy packed boerewors roll. Anyone else passing is more than welcome to join us! This is Jan’s 20-something Cycle Tour. I’m sure he knows what he’s doing.

The following morning, after a big braai send-off with 2Oceansvibe, we’re on our way to Stellenbosch and the tour proper really begins. I’ll be blogging as we go and updating you on our progress via @chrisdaviez on twitter and Getaway Magazine on Facebook. I hope you’ll join me.

40 days and 40 braais.

Bring. It. On.
