The best heritage day drives for a spring escape

Posted on 8 September 2025 By Lee-Ann Steyn

Spring in South Africa brings fresh blooms, clear skies and mild weather that make it the perfect season for a day out. It also coincides with Heritage Day on 24 September, a chance to celebrate the country’s history and culture.

One of the best ways to do both is on a road trip that combines scenic views with meaningful stops. From coastal cliffs to battlefields and jacaranda-lined streets, these one-day drives are ideal spring escapes.

1. Clarence Drive (R44), Western Cape

Few routes pack so much beauty into such a short distance. Stretching just 22 kilometres between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi-Els, Clarence Drive clings to dramatic coastal cliffs with uninterrupted views across False Bay. In spring, the ocean horizon sparkles, and the fynbos is dotted with flowers.

Heritage stops: Pull into Pringle Bay or Betty’s Bay for a glimpse of laid-back coastal living. The Stony Point Nature Reserve tells a conservation story through its thriving African penguin colony, while Harold Porter Botanical Garden introduces you to the Cape’s unique plant heritage.

Spring appeal: The season’s clear skies and colourful fynbos add extra brilliance to an already photogenic route.

2. Route 62, Klein Karoo and Beyond

Route 62 winds through mountain passes, vineyards, and dorpies steeped in character. The section between Robertson, Montagu, and Barrydale is particularly rewarding as a one-day drive.

Heritage stops: The mission stations of Zoar and Amalienstein give insight into early community building in the Klein Karoo. Oudtshoorn’s ostrich palaces speak to the feather boom that shaped the region’s economy, while towns like Montagu still showcase Victorian architecture.

Spring appeal: Vineyards and orchards are in blossom, while roadside farm stalls brim with seasonal produce. Expect baby goats and lambs on the fields as a reminder of the Karoo’s agricultural heritage.

3. Panorama Route, Mpumalanga

For sheer drama, few drives rival the Panorama Route. Starting near Graskop, the road threads past waterfalls, forests, and some of South Africa’s most iconic viewpoints.

Heritage stops: The Blyde River Canyon is a geological giant, but the area also tells human stories. Pilgrim’s Rest, a preserved gold-rush town, offers a step back into the mining era. The route also passes through communities where Bapedi cultural traditions are shared through craft and performance.

Spring appeal: Early rains turn the vegetation lush, feeding waterfalls and brightening viewpoints such as God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

4. Wild Coast Heritage Drive, Eastern Cape

The Wild Coast remains one of the country’s most unspoiled regions. Between Port St Johns and Coffee Bay, the road hugs rugged coastline, rolling green hills, and hidden beaches.

Heritage stops: This is the Xhosa heartland. Stop in villages to meet local artisans and storytellers, or detour inland to Qunu, where Nelson Mandela spent his childhood. The route is dotted with churches, trading posts, and monuments that trace the Eastern Cape’s layered history.

Spring appeal: With fewer travellers than summer, spring offers quieter beaches and perfect hiking weather along the coastline.

5. District Six Heritage Drive, Cape Town

Not all drives are about distance. Sometimes a short loop can hold immense meaning. A journey through Cape Town’s District Six is one such experience.

Heritage stops: Begin at the District Six Museum to understand the forced removals of the 1960s and 70s. From there, drive the surrounding streets where art murals and memorial plaques remember the community that once thrived here. Stop at the District Six Homecoming Centre (formerly Fugard Theatre), where cultural life is being reimagined.

Spring appeal: With Cape Town’s mild September weather, you can combine short drives with walking tours that bring the area’s layered heritage to life.

6. Freedom Route, KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal’s interior is a tapestry of valleys, rolling hills, and mountain foothills. The Freedom Route links significant sites from the province’s turbulent past.

Heritage stops: Visit the Battlefields Route, where the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars left their mark. Museums such as the Talana Museum in Dundee or the Ncome Museum near Blood River unpack complex narratives of resilience and conflict.

Spring appeal: Clear skies and green pastures make it a reflective yet scenic time to explore. Picnicking on the Drakensberg foothills adds a gentle counterpoint to the heavy history.

7. Pretoria’s Jacaranda Heritage Loop

Late spring brings a purple haze to Pretoria as thousands of jacaranda trees bloom. A heritage-focused loop links the Voortrekker Monument, the Kruger House Museum, and the Union Buildings. Driving through avenues awash in purple blossoms is a heritage-meets-nature experience that feels uniquely South African.

Travel tips for Heritage Day drives

  • Timing: Start early to allow time for stops, picnics, and unplanned detours.
  • Road conditions: Most routes are tarred, though gravel sections (like parts of the Wild Coast) may require patience.
  • Local eateries: Support small cafés and farm stalls that often carry as much heritage as the museums.
  • Guides: In places like the battlefields or Wild Coast villages, consider local guides to deepen the stories behind the scenery.
