All around the city there are small kitchens, family-run eateries and flavour-filled food counters that are cooking up the tastes of distant lands. Here, you do not need a passport to find the heart of another culture. All you need is a curious appetite and a free afternoon.

Baianos

Cuisine: Brazilian
Location: CBD
Price range: R70 to R150 per dish

Baianos delivers the flavour and energy of a Rio street café. The signature dish here is the picanha, a tender rump cap grilled to perfection and served with traditional Brazilian sides like farofa, rice, and black beans. You can also find coxinhas, deep-fried chicken croquettes that are crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside, for under R50. The vibe is lively and relaxed, perfect for a casual lunch or a sunset dinner with a tropical fruit juice in hand.

Lebanese Bakery

Cuisine: Levantine
Location: Claremont | CBD
Price range: R25 to R70 per dish

Lebanese Bakery may be small, but its reputation for excellent flatbreads stretches citywide. Their manousheh, a traditional Lebanese flatbread baked in a hot oven and topped with options like za’atar, mince, or cheese, is the star. You can grab a warm, crispy manousheh starting from just R25. The bakery also sells a variety of savoury and sweet pastries, all made fresh throughout the day. It is the kind of place where one item becomes five, and nobody regrets it.

Madam Taitou

Cuisine: Ethiopian
Location: CBD
Price range: R85 to R160 per platter

Step inside Madam Taitou and you are instantly transported to an Ethiopian jungle. Wooden masks, carved chairs, and leafy décor set the stage for a truly immersive dining experience. The food is served on large rounds of injera, a sour fermented flatbread that doubles as your plate and utensil. Choose from vegetarian and meat combo platters filled with lentils, spicy stews, and fragrant vegetables, starting at R85. This is communal food meant to be shared, slowly and joyfully.

Lin’s Takeaway

Cuisine: Japanese, Chinese
Location: CBD / Claremont

Price range: R43 to R68 per dish

Lin’s Takeaway is a Cape Town staple for those in the know. This humble spot serves generous portions of comfort food, from flavour-packed dumplings to warm ramen, all at very reasonable prices. There are no frills here. There’s only honest, tasty food that hits the spot every single time.

Andalousse Moroccan Cuisine

Moroccan hospitality is served alongside every meal at Andalousse. This gem in Sea Point is known for its rich, traditional flavours; serving slow-cooked tagines, saffron-scented couscous and creamy hummus served with warm khobz bread. Lamb tagines and chicken pastilla are favourites. Their prices fall between R95 and R130. Mint tea is poured the Moroccan way, sweet and steaming. Andalousse brings the magic of North Africa straight to your table.

Yen’s Vietnamese Street Food

Cuisine: Vietnamese
Location: De Waterkant
Price range: R60 to R120 per dish

Yen’s Vietnamese Street Food is a small but vibrant tribute to Hanoi’s pavement kitchens. The pho is a standout. It is a rich, aromatic broth with rice noodles, fresh herbs and your choice of beef or chicken, all for under R100. Spring rolls come crisp and packed with flavour, while bánh mì sandwiches offer a crunchy, spicy bite of Vietnam for around R60. The service is warm and the atmosphere feels like a quiet side street in Saigon.

There are still ways to explore the world without flight tickets in hand. Cape Town’s international food scene has quietly flourished, offering authentic, affordable meals that feel like a journey.
