While walking along the road, a pair of lions came across a cobra. A lizard, the cobra’s prey, joins the group and distracts the lions while the snake retreats back into the bush.
Daniel Anthony works as a nature guide at Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve at Chitwa Chitwa Lodge.
He shared with Latest Sightings that while on a game drive, a pride of lions appeared, and he experienced one of the best walk-byes he’s ever seen.
‘We had watched the whole pride walk past us, but something then distracted two sub-adult lions.’
A cobra slithered onto the road in front of the two lions. The game-viewing group didn’t realise that the snake was in the middle of a hunt until a lizard ran out from the shrubs.
‘The cobra, a formidable opponent, had to make a choice, sacrifice a meal or possibly become a meal.’
The snake went with the second option and moved back into the safety of the bush. The lizard remained ‘as if challenging the mighty Kings of the Jungle.’
The lions showed interest in the lizard for a while before backing off and allowing the little reptile to scurry off back into the bushes.
‘In the end, all three species walked away unharmed. The lizard definitely the luckiest of them all.’
