An African penguin named Beach Donkey, who was diagnosed with bumblefoot, took new strides at New England Aquarium in Boston recently. The 24-year-old penguin was fitted with special sandals that help her walk during the treatment.

Bumblefoot, or pododermatitis, is a condition that occurs commonly in captive penguins. Inflammation in the foot is usually a symptom associated with the condition.

‘Chronic pododermatitis can progress to a deeper infection of the underlying soft tissue structures and bone and can also predispose the bird to other health issues,’ said Melissa Joblon, an associate veterinarian at New England Aquarium speaking to Gizmodo

Staff at the aquarium looked on as she took little “field trips” around the aquarium to get accustomed to her new sandals and surroundings. You can watch it here, too!
