Killer, the heroic anti-poaching K9 ranger, dies

Posted on 7 June 2020

Anti-poaching hero, Killer was put down on the morning of Friday, June 5, after suffering from a long illness. Killer was featured in STROOP along with his handler Amos, who was with Killer when he was put to sleep.

Killer was 11-years-old and had apprehended nearly 200 poachers during his time working with the Special Ranger Unit in Kruger. He also made judicial history when the ability of a tracker dog was allowed to be portrayed by his handler in court and accepted as evidence, leading to successful convictions of rhino poachers.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that the legendary, Killer has been put to sleep on the advise of Veterinary doctors. He had been suffering from ill health for some time. This morning, his longtime companion Amos, and the K9 Manager, Johan de Beer went to pay their last respects to a hero in the anti poaching campaign. Rest in Peace Killer, you will be sorely missed,” South African National Parks (SANParks) said in a statement.

Killer met Prince Harry and had a special video message from Ricky Gervais when he won the PDSA Gold Medal for Courage back in 2016.
