Live for free on a remote Irish island

Posted on 17 January 2020

The Great Blasket Island off the coast of Ireland is looking for two people to manage accommodations and a coffee shop from 1 April to 1 October 2020. The job listing, posted by the island’s tourism centre, has stipulated that the pair can either be a couple or two friends.

In a tweet, Alice Hayes from the tourism centre said: ‘A unique position required – looking for long term management of Island Accommodation and Coffee Shop. Couple or two friends. 1st April 2020 – October 2020 accommodation and food provided.’

While no salary has been disclosed, this is a unique opportunity to get off the grid completely. The island has no WiFi, electricity, hot water and very ‘limited’ availability of drinking water, according to RTE.

The island is known for its picturesque views and the lack of connectivity will help whoever gets the position to fully immerse themselves in the experience.

‘It’s intense and tough but it’s a very unique position,” Alice Hayes said to RTE. ‘It’s back to basics – fires, candles, stoves, wildlife and nature.’

There are three cottages on the island that can sleep 21 people. The cottages and coffee shop use gas hobs to boil water. ‘We know when the water is boiled with whistling kettles on top of the hobs, and we can cook on the gas hobs as well,’ said Alice to RTE.

Alice has also assured that there is a wind turbine that generates enough electricity to charge one device at a time. The ideal candidate should be reasonably fit, have good interpersonal skills and should be friendly and approachable.
