Sandboarding in South Africa has fast become a popular outdoor and extreme board sport, drawing comparisons to snowboarding, surfing, and skateboarding—but with a sunny twist. With vast, desert-like dunes across the country, it offers the perfect natural playground for adventurers of all ages, whether you’re after a solo adrenaline rush or a fun, family-friendly outing.

What you need to know

You don’t need to be a pro—or even own a board—to get started. Most tour operators provide everything, including a quick safety briefing.

Wear:

  • Closed shoes (for grip and protection)
  • Long-sleeved shirt and long shorts or pants
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A buff or scarf to protect from blowing sand

Bring:

  • Water bottle
  • Small backpack for essentials
  • GoPro or phone with a sandproof case (if you dare to film your runs!)

Type of boards:

Most places offer waxed wooden sandboards with Formica bases designed to glide smoothly across sand. A fresh coat of wax before every ride is essential for speed.

Tips to ride like a pro (or at least not fall too much)

  • Start low: Practice on smaller dunes to build confidence.
  • Use your heels: To slow down or stop, dig your heels into the sand.
  • Stay centred: Balance your weight toward the middle of the board.
  • Go early or late: Midday heat can be brutal. Sunrise or sunset sessions are cooler and offer magical light for photos.
  • Hydrate: You’re essentially exercising on a beach—water is a must.

Combine sandboarding with other adventures

  • Cape Town: Try quad biking, paragliding, or a trip to Table Mountain.
  • Eastern Cape: Add a safari or zip-lining adventure in Addo.
  • Northern Cape: Camp under the stars in the Kalahari or visit Augrabies Falls nearby.
