This past weekend, Park rangers were called into action on Signal Hill and Lions Head, where they provided much-needed assistance and safety to hikers who ventured into the wilderness after dark.

SANParks reported that the incidents occurred on Friday night, with a notable case featuring a group of seven ladies in their late teens and early twenties who were discovered navigating the dark with their cellphones.

‘Security staff swiftly intervened, escorting the young women to safety,’

Simultaneously, another young woman found herself stranded on Signal Hill without a phone or money for transport, prompting rangers to secure an e-hailing service to assist her.

’While more and more people are taking up hiking and enjoying the beauty of nature, it appears some may not be aware of how to do so safely.

‘These incidents are concerning, as we urge hikers and visitors not to hike after sunset,’ SANParks stated.

SANParks has reinforced its ranger forces, deployed helicopter support during peak holiday periods, and conducted operations alongside law enforcement to enhance safety measures in the park.

‘We conduct targeted operations to address emerging trends,’ the organisation affirmed, underscoring proactive steps aimed at crime prevention.

In addition to the visible presence of patrols, park officials are also appealing to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or safety concerns immediately via law enforcement at 086 110 6417.

To promote a secure and pleasurable experience while visiting Table Mountain, SANParks outlines several essential safety guidelines for hikers and cyclists:

  • Hike or cycle in groups of four or more — there’s safety in numbers.
  • Visit the park during daylight hours; early morning and daytime hikes are preferred.
  • Be prepared with appropriate clothing, shoes, and essentials such as water, sun protection, and weather gear.
  • Inform someone of your plans — share your route and expected return time with a friend or family member.
  • Utilise a free mobile tracking app for additional safety.
  • Save emergency contact numbers displayed on park signboards for quick access if necessary.
  • Charge your phone before heading out to ensure you can make emergency calls.
  • Stay informed by following SANParks’ social media pages for updates on trail conditions and other safety-related alerts.
