Finland celebrates ninth happiness title with ‘Chill Like a Finn’ travel challenge

Posted on 19 March 2026 By Miriam Kimvangu Tags:Chill Like a Finn challenge, digital detox travel, Finland summer travel, Finland travel, Finnish Lakeland, happiest country in the world, nature retreats Europe, Nordic travel experiences, sauna culture Finland, slow travel destinations, sustainable travel Finland, Visit Finland, wellness travel Europe, World Happiness Report 2026

Finland has officially been named the world’s happiest country for the ninth consecutive year, according to the United Nations’ World Happiness Report 2026.

To celebrate the milestone, the Nordic nation is encouraging travellers to do something simple but increasingly rare: log off, slow down and reconnect with nature.

The latest report examines how constant connectivity and rising social media use are shaping global wellbeing, with growing evidence suggesting that excessive time online can negatively impact mental health. Finland’s response offers a different approach. Here, happiness is often linked to balance, quiet moments and time spent outdoors rather than digital engagement.

From swimming in crystal-clear lakes to warming up in a traditional sauna or walking through peaceful forests, everyday life in Finland centres on simplicity. These small rituals, deeply embedded in Finnish culture, are widely credited with contributing to the country’s consistently high happiness ranking.

To mark the occasion, Visit Finland has launched the Chill Like a Finn challenge, inviting international travellers to experience the country’s slower pace of life firsthand. The initiative offers selected participants a free seven-day summer stay in Finnish Lakeland, one of Europe’s largest lake regions, known for its vast forests, cottage retreats and tranquil natural scenery.

The Chill Like a Finn experience

Rather than a busy sightseeing itinerary, the seven-day experience focuses on rest and reconnection. Participants will embrace core elements of Finnish wellbeing, including:

  • Lakeside cottage living
  • Traditional sauna sessions followed by refreshing lake swims
  • Time spent exploring forests and nature
  • Seasonal local food shared in good company
  • A conscious break from phones and digital distractions

“In Finland, we don’t really chase happiness — we tend to find it in small, ordinary moments,” says Heli Jimenez, Senior Director of International Marketing at Visit Finland. “When life feels overwhelming, slowing down and stepping outside can make all the difference.”

How to apply

Applications for the Chill Like a Finn challenge are now open worldwide. Entrants are asked to explain why they would benefit from a summer reset and digital detox experience.

Successful applicants, along with a guest, will travel to Finland this summer to spend seven days in Finnish Lakeland learning everyday rituals associated with Finnish wellbeing, from sauna culture to long, quiet days by the water.

Applications close on 29 March 2026, after which selected participants will be announced. More information and application details are available via Visit Finland’s campaign website.
