Cape Town’s Bree Street to host 1 600-seat Mandela Day community table

Posted on 13 July 2026 By Lee-Ann Steyn

Cape Town will mark Mandela Day with an ambitious community gathering as Young Urbanists South Africa transforms part of Bree Street into a giant Langtafel, creating space for up to 1 600 people to share a meal together.

Taking place on 18 July, the event aims to bring together people from different neighbourhoods, cultures and backgrounds around one long public table, reflecting the spirit of unity and service that Nelson Mandela inspired.

Visitors are welcome to buy food from participating restaurants along Bree Street or bring a packed meal to enjoy at the table. Organisers will also provide bread for everyone attending, along with a surprise dessert.

The initiative also has a strong community focus. For those who may not be able to afford a meal, The Community Chest of the Western Cape, working alongside Studio H and partners, will provide food to ensure everyone can take part in the experience.

Beyond sharing lunch, organisers are encouraging residents to volunteer their time by helping with event preparations and supporting the Community Chest throughout the day. The call echoes the tradition of Mandela Day, where South Africans are encouraged to spend time making a positive difference in their communities.

While Mandela Day is often marked through charity drives, clean-up campaigns and donation initiatives, this year’s Langtafel offers something slightly different – a chance to connect with strangers over a shared meal in one of Cape Town’s busiest public spaces. The concept highlights how public places can become spaces for conversation, inclusion and community building.

The event will take place on Bree Street opposite Riebeek Square on 18 July 2026.

Those interested in attending or volunteering can find more information through Young Urbanists South Africa and its volunteer registration platform.
