For six years, the team at an Eastern Cape animal sanctuary never stopped hoping they would one day find Terry, a timid rescue dog who disappeared before she could settle into her new home. Against all odds, that hope has finally been rewarded.

Port Alfred-based Retreat 2 Eden, an animal welfare sanctuary in Southwell, has announced the remarkable reunion after Terry was identified nearly six years after she vanished.
A heartbreaking disappearance
Terry’s journey began at Retreat 2 Eden, where she slowly learned to trust people after being rescued from difficult circumstances.
According to the sanctuary, carers Lynne and Johann became the only people Terry truly trusted. In June 2020, they arranged what they hoped would be her forever home. However, during the handover, Terry became frightened, escaped from her transporter and disappeared before reaching her adoptive family.
Despite an extensive search involving residents, feeding stations and countless hours spent looking for her, Terry could not be found.
“As with most dogs when they get a fright and bolt, no matter how used to people they are, they often still choose to hide – it’s instinct. Sadly, over time they can become more and more difficult to catch,” Lynne explained in a Facebook post.

Hope never faded
Although months turned into years, the sanctuary never stopped searching.
Lynne and Johann continued monitoring lost-and-found pet groups, believing that one day Terry’s face might appear.
That moment finally arrived almost six years to the day after she disappeared.
While scrolling through Facebook, Lynne spotted a post about a small dog that had wandered into a garden in Hilton. The dog looked strikingly similar to Terry.
The dog had been found by Bella Knoesen Jackson, who took her to a veterinarian before caring for her while arrangements were made for transport back to Retreat 2 Eden. Animal transport volunteer Renate Haussmann later collected the dog and looked after her until she could return to the sanctuary.
The scars that confirmed everything
Although the years had changed Terry’s appearance, one detail removed all doubt.
During a video call, Lynne noticed distinctive scars on the dog’s thigh and face, identical to those Terry had before she went missing.
The long-awaited reunion confirmed what the sanctuary had hoped for all along: Terry had finally been found.
Back where she belongs
After surviving on her own for six years, Terry has now returned to Retreat 2 Eden, the sanctuary where she first experienced safety and kindness.
Given her age and extraordinary journey, the sanctuary says Terry will remain there permanently, surrounded by the people she has always trusted.
Reflecting on the reunion, Retreat 2 Eden described Terry’s story as one of resilience, hope and unwavering love.
Her remarkable return serves as a reminder that, even after years of uncertainty, some lost pets do find their way home.
