South Africa’s Kruger National Park has taken the top spot in a new ranking of the best safari destinations to visit between September and December.

As temperatures drop across the Northern Hemisphere, travellers are increasingly looking beyond traditional autumn and winter escapes and towards Africa’s wilderness areas. The shift comes as more visitors seek nature-focused experiences and the chance to witness seasonal changes across some of the continent’s most iconic wildlife destinations.
According to Holafly’s first Autumn/Winter Safari Destination Index, Kruger National Park is the best overall safari destination for this period. The ranking assessed destinations according to wildlife density, seasonal conditions between September and December, accessibility and conservation credentials.
The index places Kruger ahead of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Why Kruger came out on top
Kruger’s combination of wildlife, accessibility and accommodation options helped secure its number one position. The park is served by several regional airports and has an extensive road network managed by SANParks, making it possible for visitors to access different areas without relying heavily on costly bush flights. Its wide range of public and private accommodation also means that safari experiences can cater to different budgets. The ranking also highlights Southern Africa’s value for money, particularly for travellers hoping to enjoy quality wildlife viewing without paying the premium associated with some of East Africa’s most famous safari destinations.
Why September to December is a special time for safari
The months between September and December offer two distinctly different safari experiences. September and October fall towards the end of the dry season. With vegetation becoming increasingly sparse, wildlife can be easier to spot and animals often gather around remaining water sources. The index associates this period with strong predator sightings. By November and December, the landscape begins shifting into the so-called Green Season. Vegetation returns, the savanna becomes greener and thousands of newborn animals arrive, creating a dramatically different wildlife experience.
Hwange shines during the dry season
Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park ranked fourth overall but was highlighted as a particularly strong option for September and October. During the dry season, artificial waterholes maintained by ZimParks attract large concentrations of elephants. According to the index, these gatherings can offer exceptional wildlife viewing close to lodges, while costing less than comparable experiences in neighbouring Botswana.
Serengeti offers the spectacle of the Great Migration
For travellers who prioritise wildlife abundance over budget, East Africa remains a major draw. The Serengeti ranked second overall, with its position strengthened by the seasonal movements of the Great Migration. Between November and December, more than 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras begin moving south towards the Serengeti’s short-grass plains ahead of the calving season. However, the Serengeti’s higher conservation fees and reliance on light-aircraft transfers reduced its accessibility score in the ranking, putting it behind Kruger in the overall assessment.
The top five safari destinations for autumn and winter
According to the 2026 Autumn/Winter Safari Destination Index, the top five destinations are:
- Kruger National Park, South Africa
- Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
- South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
- Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
- Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Kruger also tops the rankings for international travellers
The best safari destination can vary depending on where a traveller starts their journey.
For Australian travellers, Kruger again takes first place, followed by Hwange, South Luangwa, Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. The ranking considered flight logistics and stopovers, with the report highlighting connections to Johannesburg as an advantage for visitors travelling from Australia.
European travellers also rank Kruger first, followed by South Luangwa, Hwange, Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. For North American travellers, Kruger is again in first place, followed by the Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Hwange and South Luangwa.
