The Grasslands National Park spans 18 properties between Nqanqarhu and Rhodes. Announced by Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister David Maynier on 9 October 2026, it will be managed by South African National Parks (SANParks).

Why these grasslands matter

Often overshadowed by South Africa’s better-known wildlife reserves, grasslands play a vital role in supporting biodiversity, protecting wetlands and maintaining water supplies.

The new park includes part of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area, which contributes to the country’s water security.

Conservation that works with landowners

The park has been established primarily through biodiversity stewardship agreements, allowing participating landowners to retain ownership while committing to conservation practices. Compatible farming activities can continue alongside efforts to protect the landscape.

The model offers a way to expand conservation without relying solely on state-owned land, while recognising the communities whose livelihoods are tied to the area.

The declaration marks an important step in protecting South Africa’s grasslands, showing that some of the country’s most valuable natural landscapes are not always its most celebrated.
